  African Drumming -- Continuing
with Alan Dworsky

Welcome to the drum! This is my legendary Wednesday night class, which plays a key role in my Gentle Djembe videos (which you can see samples of at GentleDjembe.com). We’ve been meeting at Eisenhower Elementary School through Hopkins Community Ed for almost four years now. Some of the students have been with me from the start, but many have joined the class only recently. New students are welcome to join the class at any time, and I do my best to integrate you gradually into the rhythms, giving you easy parts to play at first. But ideally, if you want to get up to speed before joining the class, you’ll get my Gentle Djembe videos to help you prepare.

The focus of the class is on the rhythms of the djembe, the powerful West African hand drum. (If you don’t have a drum yet, there will be extra drums at the class you can play.) My Gentle Djembe method adapts traditional djembe rhythms in a way that makes them easy on your hands. Many of my students are in their 40’s and 50’s, and I want them—and me!—to be able to play comfortably for a lifetime.

In addition to learning to drum and experiencing the thrill of playing with a group, by joining this class you’ll also be joining a community. The atmosphere on Wednesday nights is relaxed and informal, and we always spend a little time checking in with any news about the group (Candy went to China, Denise went back to school, Marshall had a baby girl!). We’ve been meeting on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 at Eisenhower Elementary School through Hopkins Community Ed for almost four years now.

There are several sessions of six classes each during the school year at Hopkins Community Ed. Each session usually costs about $59. To find out when the next one is starting you can call them at 952-988-4070. You can also find out about classes and register online here.

Private Drum Lessons
with Alan Dworsky

For drummers in the Twin Cities area, this is a chance to get one-on-one help from the award-winning author of How to Play Djembe, Conga Drumming, Hip Grooves for Hand Drums, A Rhythmic Vocabulary, Secrets of the Hand, Learn to Solo on Djembe or Conga, and the Gentle Djembe video series. I’ll customize my approach to exactly what you want to learn and to how you learn best. I’ll look for your drumming strengths and build on those. I also love the beginner’s mind, and am attuned to the inner game of drumming. Expect friendly individual attention, and efficient focus interrupted by laughter.

Cost: $50 for an hour-long lesson at Al’s home in Minnetonka.
